PAST EDITIONS INTERVIEWS
CAPITÃO ARTIST RESIDENCY
LOCATION
São Marcos do Campo, Reguengos de Monsaraz,
Alentejo, Portugal
CAPITÃO Artist Residency is an independent residency dedicated to supporting emerging artists under 35 at an early and formative stage of their practice. Conceived as a space of time, care, and attention, CAPITÃO offers a two-week residency focused on research, experimentation, and the development of new work.
Rather than prioritising production outcomes, the residency values process, dialogue, and situated thinking. Artists are invited to slow down, to listen to the rhythms of the place, and to work in close relation with one another, the local community, and the specific social and material context of Alentejo.
Each edition brings together 4 artists from different backgrounds and disciplines. CAPITÃO is open to a wide range of practices, including visual arts, film, sound, writing, and other hybrid or research-based approaches. The programme combines individual working time with shared moments: collective meals, informal conversations, studio visits, round tables, and one-to-one meetings with invited curators, artists, and researchers.
CAPITÃO understands the residency as a temporary community.
Knowledge is exchanged horizontally, through encounters, gestures, and shared experience. The projects developed during the residency often extend beyond the studio, taking the form of site-specific interventions, public moments, or quiet activations embedded in everyday spaces.
As an evolving platform, CAPITÃO remains attentive to new artistic languages and ways of working, responding each year to the needs of its participants and to the place that hosts them.
The residency takes place once a year, during two weeks in October, and applications are announced annually via CAPITÃO’s Instagram page.
